Spring is just around the corner. We are all looking forward to longer days with sunshine and warmer temperatures. During the month of March, the Johnson Center has gone to BIRDS! We have been celebrating birds all month. It has been so interesting learning about all the different varieties of birds. There were fabulous pictures of birds around the center as well. As you enter Fellowship Hall you can see the bird crafts that our participants created. Don't forget to look at the beautiful bird houses in our lobby.
St. Patrick's Day was a true Irish celebration. We ate Irish soda bread and listened to Irish music. So many of us wore green and the day was topped off with a lunch of corned beef and cabbage. What a fun day! Kent Denver School performed for usthis month and they were teriffic. It was such a joy to hear the beautiful voices of the young people. We look forward to having them again. We are so fortunate that the schools take the time to come to the center.
We have been doing YOGA with Patty once a month. Why do we do yoga? It increases circulation, promotes flexibility, and provides us with strength and better balance. We hope to continue this activity on a regular basis. With the warmer weather coming we look forward to planting the garden a taking nice long walks outside.

February Fun
Do you remember the Beatles hit song "All You Need Is Love"? How about Pat Boone singing "Love Letters In The Sand"? During the month of February LOVE is in the air at the Johnson Center. In honor of Valentine's Day, Cliff Spratt will be singing love songs on February 9th. Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Red roses, boxes of chocolates and other special gifts make us all think of this special day. Be sure to watch out for Cupid's arrow!!

A professional storyteller, a quilt display and yoga are just a few of the special activities planned for the month. We have started a pen pal program with some of the 5th grade students from Littleton Prep. It has been so much fun reading about them and their families. We hope they have enjoyed learning about us as well. We are excited to meet them when they come with their teacher on February 5th. Our cooking class with Jonna has been so busy making homemade rolls and other delicious treats. They always manage to make some extras for the staff!
For all the football fans out there be sure to watch the Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday,February 7th. We look forward to post game discussions among the participants. Of course, the commercials are always a topic of conversation. The Winter Olympics begin on February 12th in Vancouver. It will be 2 weeks of skiing, skating and other winter sports. The Chinese New Year, the year of the Tiger, will begin on February 14th. So many of our activites for the month will be centered on these events.
The Center will be open for President's Day on Monday, February 15th. Presidential Trivia will be the highlight for that day. It is also Library Lover's month, so make a special trip to your local library and check out a few good books.

Happy New Year
2010 is officially underway at the Johnson Center. New Year's resolutions have been made and we look back on the holiday season with fond memories. Our Santa Social was FABULOUS! What a fun day filled with music, dancing and holiday cheer. We want to thank Wilma, Steve and Dick for entertaining us with their tunes from the past during our New Year's celebration. How lucky we were to toast 2010 together among friends.
So far, January has been so cold. Some of us have commented that it is weather for polar bears and penguins. Our favorite song has been "Baby, It's Cold Outside". Despite the cold, we have been staying warm and keeping busy with many different activities. The National Stock Show will be in town and we will celebrate Western Welcome Week during the entire month. Look for Western Week on January 18-22. Be sure to wear your western clothes-----boots, jeans, cowboy hats----whatever you want. There will be plenty of western trivia, games and discussions about the wild west. Country music will be provided by Don Garcia on Thursday, Janury 21st.
Dr. Martin Luther King will be honored on Monday, January18th. The Center will be open as we pay tribute to the great civil rights leader. We look forward to hearing about the life of Dr. King and some excerpts from his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
Did you know that January 23rd is National Pie Day? What a great opportunity to indulge by having a piece of your favorite pie!!

Happy Holidays!
December is here and the holiday season is in full swing! What a great month of entertainment and holiday fun we have had so far. Five high school choirs, the "Jubilee Ringers" handbell choir and all our other wonderful musicians have brought the holiday spirit to all of us at JADP. Cliff Spratt will be" rockin' around the Christmas tree" with his great music at our holiday party on Wednesday, December 16th at 1:45. We are looking forward to an afternoon of music, dancing, singing and a special visitor from the North Pole.
We will be ringing in 2010 on Thursday, December 31st with our annual New Years's Eve party. Steve, Wilma and Dick will be here to play trumpet, piano and bass. There will be plenty of dancing and several toasts to the upcoming year. We continue to enjoy Tai Chi every Tuesday and Friday morning. Several of us already feel the benefits of improved physical strength and overall calmness!
The Johnson Adult Day Program would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season and a New Year filled with joy and blessings. The center will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Enjoy the weeks ahead.

November News
The holiday season is just around the corner! The fall season has just flown by. During the month of November we have been celebrating " Circles of Blessings." We are all grateful to be able to come to the Johnson Center, be with our friends there and have the fun that we do. All of the activity rooms--- Friendship Circle, Inner Circles 1 and 2, and Cozy Circle provide a loving and nuturing environment. What a blessing!
A heartfelt tribute goes out to all of our Veterans who served with honor for the sake of our country. On November 11, we were so lucky to have 6 members of VFW Post 322 do a patriotic program for us. They showed us how to fold the flag and answered whatever questions we had. Thank you Lyle, Jean, Mert, Maggie, Christine and MaryLee.
We would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to our participants, staff and families. The Center will be closed for Thanksgiving Day, but will be open on Friday, 11/27/2009. Hope everyone enjoys the turkey and trimmings and most of all, the blessings we all have in our lives.

Halloween Happenings
So far, October has been a great month. We have several new participants and lots of visitors that have come to the center. Everyone enjoys meeting new people and sharing the fun that the Johnson Center provides. During the month, we have been celebrating "Travel around the World." So many of us have traveled to different countries and different continents. It has been so interesting to learn about different customs and cultures while sharing so many personal travel stories. Also, there are so many beautiful posters of different countries in Fellowship Hall.
A big thanks goes to Amey (one of our CNA'S) , her family and friends for the wonderful fashion show a few weeks ago. They modeled clothing from Togo in Africa which is where Amey and her family are originally from. The clothes were so colorful and beautiful. The background beat of the African drum transported us to a different land. As the month continues, we look forward to more travel trivia and discussions.

September News
September is such a beautiful month in Colorado! Warm days, cooler mornings and evenings, along with changing leaves are a sure sign that fall is just around the corner. In honor of fall, we are celebrating "Back to School Days" for the month. We have had so much fun telling stories about what our school days were like. Several of us went to one room country schools. History and arithmetic were two of our favorite subjects. As the month goes on, we will continue to enjoy word games and discussion groups relative to school days.
We are excited about our new cooking group on Thursday mornings. Last week we talked about harvest foods and some of our favorite recipes. The smell of fresh apple pie baking on a crisp fall day was a memory shared by all. Hoping for a great turnout for the Memory Walk on Saturday, September 19 , 2009. Our staff will be there, so stop by our booth and say hello.
Happy Fall and look for the Harvest Moon on October4.

All About August
Summer has just flown by! We have been enjoying warm, sunny days on the patio and daily walks in the garden. We will miss all of our summer volunteers who are heading back to school. They have been so helpful to the staff and the participants. We are so grateful to them and wish them continued success in their future.
We will celebrate Hawaii during the month of August. Hawaii was declared the 50th state on August 21, 1959----- 50 years ago! Hawaiian Week will be the last week in August. Our annual Hawaiian Luau will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 at 1:45 P.M. Music will be provided by Cliff Spratt (in his Hawaiian shirt) and hula dancing with Nadine. It is a fun filled afternoon. We are looking forward to eating Hawaiian food, word games, trivia and other activities with an Hawaiian theme.
Be sure to sign up for the Memory Walk on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at City Park. All donations are welcome and go to the Alzheimer's Association. They continue on their quest to find a cure for the disease. What a great cause!

The Senior Prom of 2009 was a huge success. Fellowship Hall was filled with balloons, decorations, dancing, wonderful music and great company. A big thank you goes out to Wilma, Steve and Dick for the great music that brought back so many wonderful memories. It was amazing to see everyone dressed in their finest along with corsages and boutonnieres. The highlight of the afternoon was the crowning of the King and Queen and their first dance. So many families joined in the fun and a great time was had by all!
During the month of July we will be celebrating pets with our first "Pet Parade". Staff and participants are invited to bring in photos of their pets along with stories or perhaps a real live pet. Dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, horses----you name it! Most people have fond memories of their pets, past or present. We look forward to sharing all of these with one another. There will be a display area for all the photos. It should be lots of fun and a great way to honor our furry friends.
The Center will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2009 to celebrate the holiday weekend. We wish all our participants and families a fun and safe 4th of July. Enjoy all the picnics, barbecues and firework displays.

June Happenings
Summer is around the corner and our flower and vegetable gardens have been planted. We have been busy tending to all the different variety of flowers and enjoying the beautiful array of colors.
Gardening in the fresh air and sunshine is relaxing and therapeutic. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all our summer volunteers from Swedish Medical Center. We look forward to getting to know all of you.
The Senior Prom will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 1:45pm. Music will be provided by the trio of Wilma, Steve, and Dick (husband of one of our participants). It will be an afternoon filled with great music, prizes, refreshments, and of course dancing! We look forward to seeing who the King and Queen of the Prom will be.

What a great day at the Johnson Adult Day Program,seniors and staff are getting out into the warm and sunny weather .

About the Center
The Johnson Center is a specialized facility in Englewood providing adult day activities to those with memory or physical impairments. Respite, education and case management services are provided for caregivers.
The Center is the only stand-alone day center in Denver specifically designed for those with memory loss. The facility is equipped with an electronic roam alert system as well as secured outdoor gardens and paths. A multi-level approach is used for activities, with rooms designated for specialized programs to accommodate the changing needs of participants. The Center hosts a variety of daytrip experiences for all levels of participation and is pleased to offer full-time medical over site by a registered nurse.
